More about this product
Small Mug made at the Leach Pottery.
Available in the following glazes: Dolomite, Tenmoku & Ash.
Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the Leach Pottery is among the most respected and influential studio potteries in the world. The Pottery continues Bernard’s legacy by making handcrafted Leach Standard Ware and individual pieces whilst training the next generation of potters in our historic pottery nestled away in St Ives.
Leach Standard Ware pottery is thrown on the wheel by an international team of production potters, volunteers and apprentices, using stoneware clay from Doble's claypit in St Agnes, Cornwall - much the same clay as was used in the original Leach Standard Ware production.
Glazing Information
Leech Standard Ware pottery comes in a range of stoneware glazes which are selected and developed for their quality and colour and are laboratory tested for food safety. The pots are fired to 1280 degrees Celsius, resulting in a dense and durable product. During the firing, the amount of oxygen in the kiln's atmosphere is reduced and the flame pulls oxygen from the clay and glazes instead, infusing the glazes with deep, rich, iron tones. Due to the unpredictability of the firing process and materials, all glaze finishes are unique and can vary significantly.
DOLOMITE: this creamy white glaze is named after the high percentage of the mineral dolomite in the mix. Iron in the clay body comes through, giving a hint of blue.
TENMOKU: originating in China, this iron-rich glaze gives a deep black finish, breaking to red-brown where it is thinner.
ASH: mixed using locally sourced wood ash, this glaze is a soft translucent green with subtle variations, depending on the ash supplied.
