BEAR is situated in a Grade II listed building in historic town of Petworth, West Sussex. As an independent, newly founded business, our goal is to offer an interesting and beautiful mix of pieces for the home and soul. We choose each piece for its aesthetic merits, quality and enduring design rather than being confined to a period or place of production. We have embraced William Morris’ wise words as our ethos: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’ Beauty and simplicity allow us to make lasting, sustainable lifestyle choices, which is our principle.
We have a passion for the freedom and simplicity of expression exemplified by architects and designers of the Mid Century Modern era, particularly from Europe and the USA, and our stock comprises pieces by well-known names.
Meeting the same criteria, we stock interesting antique pieces from all over the world, including Europe, Asia and the Middle East. If we do not have what you are looking for, either modern or antique, we operate a sourcing service. We also pleased to offer a growing range of traditional and contemporary style furniture and lamps made exclusively for BEAR by craftsmen in West Sussex. Our soft furnishings also are locally made.
To complement our furniture and accessories, we stock heavenly scented items from the Florentine cult brand Santa Maria Novella; elegant and tactile stoneware ceramics from the Leach Pottery, St Ives; colourful French table linens from Maison de Vacances; ethically produced homewares woven by women in Swaziland for Gone Rural; Welsh wool tapestry throws and bedspreads from Melin Tregwynt; and personalised lambskin fleece blankets by Nordic Snug. If you are looking for that special gift, wedding present or simply a treat for yourself, look no further.
We look forward to welcoming you to BEAR. If you have never been to Petworth before, you will not be disappointed!
